FERWAFA sets March 31 as date for electing new president

The local football governing body (FERWAFA) Electoral Commission has set March 31, 2018, as the new date for presidential elections to be held at Lemigo Hotel in the City of Kigali.

While addressing the media in a press conference on Friday, the Electoral Commission president Adolph Kalisa said that process of process of candidates interested in aspiring for the presidency is open to all however he noted that candidate willing to do so should submit their nomination credentials by February 19th.

Scrutinizing candidates will be done by February 28th according to Kalisa, while after ten days the commission will receive petitions as well as hear the appeals if any.

After a day, candidates who are fit to stand will be declared well on March 12th all candidates will officially start their campaigns and the selected candidate will be officially announced on March 31st.

In the last Ferwafa elections held early last month, Felicite Rwemalika was competing against herself in a wake of the dramatic withdrawal of incumbent Vincent Nzamwita, who cited family and personal reasons.

Felicite, however, ended up ‘losing the election to win the majority vote as required by the FERWAFA statutory constitution.

Rwemalika who is also the Vice President of Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee garnered an insignificant 13 votes from a possible 52 from the executive members present as 39 of them returned invalid.

Going by the elections that attracted observers from CAF and FIFA, the results showed Rwemalika unsuccessful failed to rally the required majority vote of 26-1.

The state of affairs forced the Electoral Commission to go for a closed-door meeting to decide on the way forward. The verdict was passed for the current FERWAFA team to continue exercising its duties until completion of the electoral process.

The new elected FERWAFA Executive Committee will serve a four-year term with a leeway to stand for a second term in office.
