Muluzi, Law society call for Joyce Banda to take over as Malawi president

The former president of Malawi, Bakili Muluzi says Vice president Joyce Banda should immediately take over the national leadership following the dearth of President Bingu Wa Mutharika’s  which the state is still keeping as a secret.

Last night, the state media reported that president Mutharika was in a stable condition and transferred to South Africa. However, A medical doctor among those who are following Mutharika’s health has confirmed to Great Lakes Voice, that he is dead.

Dr. Bakili Muluzi has told the press that whatever would happen regard the incapacity of President Bingu wa Mutharika, the constitution should be followed. However, Muluzi could not deny or confirm about Mutharika’s dearth.

“Perhaps it’s politics going on here. I don’t understand why the state shouldn’t tell the citizens about the real situation. He was their beloved president.” The senior doctor told Great Lakes Voice

The Malawi Law society, civil society and Dr. Bakili Muluzi said Joyce Banda should swear in as the president in case Mutharika is incapable or dead.

“About succession issue, let’s follow the constitution. I am glad that 70 percent of Malawians want me, but let’s wait for the official statement.” Joyce Banda said

Addressing the journalists at his home BCA Limbe early today, Dr Muluzi demanded that “there should constitutional order.” Muluzi also said that those in power should respect the rule of law.

“For I know that the people of Malawi are waiting to know the situation of their president since there is no official communication, but I can advise them to be patient and the government should be responsible to tell the nation the truth about Prof. Mutharika.”

According to Muluzi, to avoid confusion, the country must respect the rule of law in this situation the constitution.
