Rwanda to host ever EAC Arts and Cultural Festival

The 2nd Regional Steering Committee of the EAC secretariat is in Kigali for three days 4th-7th Dec 12 to prepare grounds of the events for the 1st Edition of EAC culture festival events that Rwanda will be the host by March 6-16th 2013.

The Principle Culture and Sports Officer Bakaye B. Lubega speaking with Greatlakesvoice.com said ’’The festival is aimed to promote regional socio-cultural by integrating different kind of arts and culture from the block’’ where as the theme of the festival is ‘‘Fostering EAC integration through culture industries’’

This comes after 20th Meeting of the Council of Ministers held in March 2010 in which the Secretariat was directed to hold a regular EAC Arts and Cultural Festival amongst the member state on a rational basis.

JAMAFEST (Jamuhuri ya Africa Mashariki Utamaduni Festival) as its blended name will provide a platform to showcase culture as a primary driver of regional integration and sustainable development, bringing together East African cultural practitioners and administrators with intercultural dialogue amongst the people of EAC through and creating a market for cultural good and services.

JAMAFEST will promote arts and culture as a tool of communication in Blanding the image of EAC diverse culture.

A Local Organization Committee (LOC) under the Rwanda Ministry of Sports and Culture will be established to facilitate the organization of the festival events. The first Opening and Closing Ceremonies that comprise with Singing Official EAC Anthem, Festival theme song, Speech from the guest of honor, Special programs for children/groups, choreography, Fireworks and party.

JAMAFEST Village of Countries Exercise of visiting artist, sharing and teaching participant of the EAC member states about an aspect of their culture like food, language, traditional practices and dance with the public as a way to publicizing the festival.

Two days will be set apart to have the local and other participant artist to showcase and sell their commodities such as jewelries, clothing, curious painting, drawing and designs.

Workshop and Symposium Different workshop will be featured by professional and experienced local and visiting artist with various activities while the symposium will be on the theme of the festival ’’Fostering EAC integration through Cultural industries’’

The festival will be marked by Dances and Music (modern and traditional), Poetry, Oratory, Folklore and storytelling conducted at popular places and through procession around Kigali (mobile festival)
