Shooting Touch to launch non communicable disease awareness campaign in Kayonza

Shooting Touch, Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC), the district of Kayonza and the Nyamirama Health Center will partner to launch non-communicable disease awareness campaign to over 1,000 people in Kayonza district.

The campaign starts on March Saturday 17th in the morning with ST and community members meeting at Nyamirama Health Center/ST Court to walk together through Nyamirama, to bring awareness for a cause.

At 10:00 am, the walk will finish at the Nyamirama Health Nyamirama court where NCD testing’s; including breast cancer examinations and STDs/STIs testing (HIV, Hepatitis, and Urinary Tract Infections) will be taking place.

Alongside the testing, ST participants will be taking part in basketball competitions.

According to the communiqué from Shooting Touch, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), are by far the leading cause of death in the world, representing 63% of all annual deaths, the equivalent to 36 million lives each year. 80% of those deaths are in low- and middle- income countries.

“We are looking at the Eastern Province of Rwanda, the District of Kayonza is in the top 12 districts of the country for prevalence of obesity (12), alcoholism (5) and smoking (6) (according to Rwandan Diabetes Association).” It communiqué reads

In order to combat the prevalence of NCD growth, Shooting Touch (ST), an organization using the power of basketball to deliver global health education, intervention and empowerment to at-risk youth, women and their families, wants to bring awareness to various communities in Kayonza.

Throughout the day, informational pamphlets, guest speakers, and various court activities will take place to continue to educate and bring awareness of the illness that the organization is fighting. The event will finish at 2:00 pm.
