Tanzania Boxing championiship set for February

The national amateur boxing championships are expected to take place on February 15 at the Indoor National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam yesterday, the Boxing Federation of Tanzania (BFT) secretary general, Makore Mashaga, said the championships will involve boxing teams from all regions in the country.

Mashaga said after the championships 10 boxers will be selected to represent the nation in the 2012 London Olympic Games qualifiers that will be held in Casablanca, Morocco.

The secretary general said the federation had decided to organize the championships to make sure that the selected pugilists will meet standards required for international tournaments.

He said all regions have been informed to prepare their teams for the national championships.

Mashaga also said the BFT’s Executive Committee and coach Emmanuel Edward, who will be training the national team, will announce names of boxers who will perform well in the championships.

According to Mashaga, the selected pugilists will start training in Dar es Salaam after the championships preparing for the Olympic Games qualifiers.

The Olympic Games qualifiers have been slated for April 27 in Casablanca and will involve boxers from Africa.

Meanwhile, an international course for boxing coaches is expected to be held from January 16 to 24 in Dar es Salaam, according to Mashaga.

The course will be under instructor Josep Diof from Senegal.

The BFT secretary general said the course will be for club and national team coaches from all over the country who would want to attend.
