The first edition of Triathlon Genocide Memorial Tournament is scheduled to take place this Saturday June 17th, 2017 at Karongi Beach according to Rwanda Triathlon Federation (RTF).

For the RTF that was established in 2013, the competition is organized against the backdrop of honoring those who passed on and the survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The GMT is expected to attract over 30-40 triathletes both male and female to take part in a multiple-stage competition involving the completion of three continuous and sequential endurance disciplines, swimming, cycling and athletics.

According to the official competition program, the GMT will feature 750m in the lake starting at Kibuye Beach, 5 laps (20km) of bike racing and 2 laps (8km) of running.

Ida Alexandra Humuza de Cordier, the Vice-President of RTF told Time sport that GMT is organized to honor those who died as well as survivors. We expect other ten or more contestants from Embassy and representatives from international organizations

“Being a new federation, it is the first time RTF is organizing the GM to commemorate those who passed away, survivors and children. Most of the triathletes are from volleyball, swimming and cycling, they have either lost someone or are children of those who passed away.”

The top podium performers in the junior, male senior and female category will be awarded
