Uganda female journalist wins Cairo scholarship

KAMPALA, UGANDA-The Egyptian government has today Thursday given a journalist employed by Voice Media Group (VMG) Journalist a scholarship to pursue a one month training course in Cairo.

Ms Lucy Anyango Ekadu, the Uganda Journalists Union (UJU) President and Chairperson Eastern Uganda Press Club, joins other journalists from 20 African countries, who will train in Mass Communication and International Relations starting December2, 2011.

 

According to Uganda Journalists Union Secretary General Stephen Ouma, the course was organized by the Cairo based Union of African Journalists (UAJ) in conjunction with the Egyptian Information Ministry and sponsored by the Egyptian government.

“Lucy Ekadu is the 18th Ugandan journalist to receive the Egyptian scholarship under the UJU partnership and is the fifth upcountry journalist to benefit from the programme,” Ouma said in a statement.

The other upcountry journalists who have trained under the programme are Patrick Alion – Voice of Life (Arua), Hon Ronah Ninsiima – Radio West (Mbarara) and Moses Lwochaza – Radio Simba (Jinja).

 

Egyptian Ambassador to Uganda His Excellency Sabry Sabry said his government would continue sponsoring Ugandan journalists to develop their professional careers. “We support training of journalists, an independent, free but responsible media that helps in developing the country” he said.

 

Uganda Journalists Union (UJU) Vice President Mr Norman Katende applauded Egyptian government sponsorship in training Ugandan journalists to develop human resource manpower.

He said UJU would continue to strengthen links and partnership with the Union of Africa Journalists to train more Ugandan journalists. “UJU would strengthen links with Egyptian partners in pursuit of training Ugandan journalists,” he said.

Uganda Journalists Union that is affiliated to the Brussels based International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has a membership of over 800 Journalists.
