Kampala-Major General Sam Nanyumba, the former chief of staff of Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) is believed to be dead. Sources at Mulago hospital, say that Nanyumba passed away on Tuesday morning at Mulago National Referral Hospital following a long illness.

It is believed the deceased died of heart complications though no authorities had confirmed.

UPDF spokesperson, Lt. Con Felix Kulayigye, could not comment on the death, for He repeatedly told Great Lakes Voice, he was in the ‘meeting’

Nanyumba was appointed army chief of staff in the early 1990s but was dropped in 1999 after clashes between UPDF and Rwandese Patriotic Army (RPA now RDF) in Democratic Republic of Congo.

He was later reappointed Uganda’s ambassador to Rwanda but was dropped in 2005.

Nanyumba has been living a quiet life despite the fact that President Yoweri Museveni rejected his application to retire from the army.

The deceased was the most senior UPDF officer from Busoga in the UPDF.
