Buganda Road chief magistrate James Mawanda Eremye has remanded to Luzira prison one Yekoyada Nuwagaba, a senior presidential advisor on political matters for unlawful possession of protected wildlife species according to Chimpreports

The Presidential advisor was arrested with several dozen kilograms of hippopotamus teeth valued at over 50,000 USD.

According to Prosecution, the accused and his accomplices who are on the run, on 20th February 2017 at Casablanca Club Kampala in Kampala, were found with 109kgs of hippo teeth valued at 30,500 US dollars and later with another 78.5 kg of Hippo teeth valued at 27,500 US dollars as well as tortoise scales and one tortoise valued at 1746 US Dollars.

Yekoyada who is charged alongside two others still at-large, denied all the three counts. He also applied for bail through his lawyer Simon Peter Musangala, which was denied.

The trial magistrate declined to release him on bail having been told by Winnie Namayanja, a prosecutor from Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) that he jumped police bond.

Namayanja had earlier informed court that it took the state ten months and a lot of resources to have Nuwagaba re-arrested and brought before court.

The magistrate advised the applicant to look for another surety to stand for him, as Patrick Bainomugisha had proved lack of moral authority to come in court, having failed to fulfil his duties at Police.

“Although the applicant produced in court Gloria Atuhaire, his daughter as a surety, he has the liberty to do so but he shall require another surety who will ensure his presence in court” ruled the magistrate.

Nuwagaba has been remanded to Luzira until 12th December 2017 when he will come back for bail application.
