Reigning Orange Africa Nations Cup champions, Chipolopolo of Zambia, barely made it to the finals of the African Nations’ Cup, to be hosted by South Africa in 2013, when it scraped through in a second-leg, final qualifying match against the Cranes of Uganda.
Zambia won the first-leg 1-0 at home in September but fell 0-1 Saturday in Kampala to take the tie to penalty shootout.
Zambia prevailed 9-8 in the shootout.
Uganda Cranes AFCON jinx still continues after another heart breaking campaign that ended in a penalty shoot-out.
In other games, Afriyie Acquah’s third-minute goal was enough for the visiting Ghanaians to shove Malawi aside and qualify for South Africa 2013 on a 3-0 goals aggregate, having won the first leg 2-0 back in Ghana.
Mali beats Botswana 4-1, qualifies on 7-1 aggregate – Mali, in Gaborone with a 3-0 goals advantage, Saturday made ‘minced meat’ of Botswana, lashing the hosts 4-1 in their second-leg, final qualifying match for a place in the African Nations’ Cup finals, taking place in South Africa in 2013.
The Malians therefore qualified on a 7-1 goals aggregate, having won the first leg 3-0 at home in September. The Malian goals came in the 29th, 56th, 72nd and 81st minutes.
Botswana scored their consolatory goal in the 88th minute.
Nigeria has booked their place in South Africa with a 8-3 aggregate victory against Liberia.
By press time Ghana,Zambia,Mali,Nigeria have booked their spots for Afcon2013 in South Africa.
