BUJUMBURA, BURUNDI-The Bank of the Republic of Burundi (BRB) has extended the date for withdrawing from circulation the old banknotes of one hundred Burundian francs. The deadline that had been set for March 31, 2011 has been postponed to April 29, 2011.
According to the Finance Ministry and BRB officials, for this second time now, “the BRB invites all holders of these notes to have them exchanged at banks, microfinance institutions and the counters of the National post, before this new deadline.”
As Burundi National Bank extends the dead-line, the local business operators who still have the old notes in circulation for purchasing goods are concerned about this new extension of time for withdrawal of the bank notes, since many people are being victimized when paying with the old note.
Differences over the validity of these old notes of hundred francs and the new (the size counterparts versus new) occurred in several economic sectors of national life. The latest case was on Wednesday when one of the victim bearers holding the old note was detained for over an hour by the police in Bujumbura main police headquarters.
The public bus money collector and his driver demanded the new notes under pretexts that the period of validity of the former had expired.
The withdrawal of notes of one hundred francs follow those of five thousand Burundian francs, two thousand, and five hundred thousand francs to adapt to new dimensions adopted since the introduction of ten thousand francs Burundi.
