Burundi pushes towards good governance strategy

Bujumbura-Burundi will soon adopt a national strategy for good governance and free corruption method Great Lakes Voice reports.

The officers of the department in charge of Good Governance met Monday, 9 May with representatives of partner organizations in Burundi to discuss the draft of this strategy to enrich before it’s tabled and adopted in cabinet meeting.

The 56-page document was drafted by a consultant to guide the country to fulfill the standard norms accepted by the World Bank.

The purpose of the meeting was to gather input from partners and ensure that we look in the same direction, said the Minister in charge of Good Governance, Jean Baptiste Gahimbare who presented the document to this workshop.

“It’s a good thing to have, finally, a vision that will serve as reference for the government and its partners in good governance and fight against corruption, “Gahimbare welcomed the document saying “it’s a good step”

according to Gahimbare, the strategy takes account of existing and seeks to correct the deficiencies. It will require of course a review of some existing laws to create favorable conditions for governance norms and the fight against corruption.

Contributions have been made. Participants suggested that among other codes and laws should be amended to be well adapted to the national strategy.

“The cases of bribery and embezzlement which are pending are to be prosecuted urgently, and the establishment of the law separating the political capacities and of technical positions is also necessary.” Gahimbare added.

The document will again be debated at a higher level before being discussed by the Council of Ministers for adoption in June.
