Bemba affair: ICC presents evidences pining former warlord

International Criminal Court (ICC), prosecution finished on Thursday 22 March, presenting its evidence in the Bemba case. Prosecutor Morino Okampo completed this presentation after the closed hearing of witness 36. Protected by a pseudonym, this witness testified for seven days via video link from Kinshasa in the DRC.

In sixteen months, the prosecution called to the bar 40 witnesses, including 23 direct victims of crimes allegedly committed by soldiers of the Movement for the Liberation of Congo (MLC), four expert witnesses of context and “insiders , “former allies of Jean-Pierre Bemba who turned against him.

However, there are some difficult to assess the weight of this evidence, much of which was heard in camera by the three judges of the chamber.

Next Tuesday, the judges will hear attorneys represented victims of 2744 in the trial and supporters of Jean-Pierre Bemba to discuss the results of the procedure. Two victims should then begin their affidavit and three are expected to present their views to the Board.

It will then turn to the defense of Congolese senator to call his witnesses to the stand. Counsel also the ability to call the accused to submit themselves before the judges. But so far they have not revealed their intentions.

Senator Bemba is on trial before the ICC since November 22, 2010. He is charged with crimes against humanity and war crimes allegedly committed by soldiers of the former armed movement, the MLC, in Central Africa in 2002 and 2003.

His troops were deployed there in reinforcing the national army, which faced a rebellion against the regime of former President Patassé
