Colonel Nteziyaremye alias Makoto- of the Rally for Unity and Democracy (RUD) a breakaway faction of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) has defected to Rwanda.

RUDI is a break-away faction of FDRL, whose ultimate general commander is Brigadier General Musare, as Nteziyaremye has been at RUDI headquarters in charge of publicity and political doctrine and the relations with civilians (J5).

Looking tired, in civilian clothes, Nteziyaremye said he was “fed-up with life in the DRC forests” and decided to repatriate willingly. “I was tired and frustrated by life in the bush and when I got the opportunityI decided to return home,” Nteziyaremye said.

The colonel who had spent 16 years in the forests of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo was received by the United Nations mission in Congo (MONESCO) from Rubero in northern Kivu province. The motivation to repatriate was due to the communication he had with his ex combatants who had returned earlier and his relatives who live in the country.

“I kept receiving messages from my former colleagues who defected to Rwanda and my family who assured me that Rwanda was peaceful and the government preferred us to return willingly other than by armed force,” he said.

According to Nteziyaremye, RUDI has a force numbering between 280 to 320 rebels who are lacking basic logistics, new recruits and political support. “Our objective was to capture power through armed force but given lack of logistics and shortage of recruits as well as support, one would be wrong to assume that any rebel group in eastern Congo can take over power in Rwanda,” Nteziyaremye narrated.

The now former rebel had gone outside the RUD territory to solicit the education material for the rebel’s children as well as identifying immunisation centres when he decided not to return to the bush.

Nteziyaremye still wants to continue his military career if only he could be granted that opportunity by Rwanda Defence Forces.
