Over 600 houses destroyed by rains in Burundi

One person is reported to have died and more than six hundred houses were destroyed by rain in Burundi on Sunday.

According to reports, the torrential rains of March 21 caused enormous damage in several corners of Bujumbura: in Muha commune, a fourth year medical student from the University of Burundi, Chanciella Kaneza, died near her home. 

The victim is reported to have slipped, before leaning on an electric cable and died of electrocution.

In the same commune, the administration reports 232 houses destroyed, including 73 in the Musaga zone, 159 in the Kanyosha zone as well as 6 churches and two schools whose classrooms collapsed. Six electric poles were also demolished.

In Gatumba in Mutimbuzi commune, the administration tentatively advances the figure of 110 destroyed houses. 140 houses and 11 classrooms at Lycee Kirwati II were devastated. According to the administration, this disastrous toll could increase.
