Rwanda: District drags feet on launching opposition party

KIGALI-Rwanda-Mr. Frank Habineza, the founding party president of Democratic Green Party of Rwanda, is in limbo after the mayor of Gasabo district drags his feet to give a green light for the launch of the party.

According to letter seen by this publication, dated 25/9/2012 addressed to Gasabo district mayor, requesting the permission to hold a public meeting.

“I humbly request you to grant us permission to hold a public meeting in your district. The meeting will take place on Friday 16th November 2012 and planed to be held at sports view Hotel, Remera from 08:00AM” the letter also copied to the local government Ministry, IGP of Police and Kigali City mayor reads in apart

Frank Habineza is the founder and chairman of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda, a political party formed in August 2009 in Rwanda. In its first year, the party made six unsuccessful attempts to register and now trying for seven times.

According to Habineza, Gasabo district have been promising to avail the go ahead letter but in vain. “The mayor has promised to give us the letter and we are still waiting. However, we are worried of the dead line we had set,” Habineza said

Gasabo mayor, Willy Ndizeye has many times promised to talk to us on the issue but he was yet to be reached during the press time.
