The alert is to all U.S. citizens living in Rwanda of heightened security concerns that regional terror groups, including al-Qaida and the Somalia-based al-Shabaab, remain actively interested in attacking U.S. interests in the region.

The US embassy, Tuesday, pointed out the security concerns in the coming months of February, 2011 about the possibility of attack on U.S interests in the region and Rwanda particularly by terror organisations.

“We also remind you of the current travel warning for Burundi and the new travel warning for Uganda.” The statement adds in apart.

The warden alert, In light of this threat, the U.S. Mission in Kigali cautions U.S. citizens to take the following measures:

  • Be alert for suspicious activity, and report any suspicious activity to the Rwandan police by calling 311.
  • Ask yourself “What would I do in case of an attack?” and be prepared to enact your plan.
  • Avoid large public gatherings, especially those with large numbers of westerners and/or no visible security presence.
  • Keep your cell phone charged and with you at all times.
  • “It’s my first time to hear about the story of the alert; however, there is no reason to panic because our force is always ready to encounter any possible attack.” Superintendent Theos Badege, Rwanda’s police spokesman told Great Lakes Voice on the telephone interview.

as Badage says the police is ready, an official from military intelligence said the situation is under control and their department is monitoring the situation closely.

Badage added that, the alert should not cause any alarm, there is a good coordination of all security services and the community in terms of keeping Rwanda safe and secure.

The alert comes at the time when US embassy in Kigali had issued warnings of December 10 and 23, 2010 related to security concerns as well as the latest Department of State Worldwide Travel Caution dated August 12, 2010.
