Rwanda pushes AIDS prevalence from 3.5 to 1.5 percent by PREPEX methods

KIGALI-Rwanda, No blood, No surgery, no sterilised room needed. No anesthesia and takes between three to six minutes to- carry out circumcision as medical experts believe that the method will reduce significantly AIDS prevalence in the country.

Rwanda Military Referral Hospital is leading implementation of a new method of circumcision known as “PREPEX” conceived from Israel American researcher and directly piloted in Rwanda and now spreading to Zimbabwe, Uganda, Namibia, Swaziland and Tanzania.

“We have circumcised more-than 2000 people and now we have finished screening 300 people who are ready to get involved into the exercise. However, we are launching army week in Rusizi and we expect to have a big number of people to be circumcised.” LT Col. Jean Paul Bitega said

Rwanda officials say PREPEX method will enable the country circumcise 2Millions Rwandans bringing down AIDS prevalence from currently 3.5 to 1.5 per cent.

Healthy Ministry estimates that at least 85 per cent of men in Rwanda are not circumcised.

The current research says circumcision reduces chances of HIV infection to 60 per cent; medical practitioner’s say the trend will directly reduce HIV prevalence.

Rwanda’s health ministry has got Food, Drugs Authority (FDA) accreditation. LT Col. Bitega says enough nurses have been trained to carry out circumcision country wide.

“We are carrying out skills transfer by training nurses and foreign doctors to have job down” Bitega said.

Rwanda is supervising implementation, training and skills transfer in Africa and now seeking World Health Organisation accreditation.
