Time for leaders who muzzle media is over-Min Mushikiwabo

KIGALI-RWANDA-in the two days debate engaging African editors and African politicians in Kigali, under the theme: Positioning Africa, Rwanda’s foreign affairs Minister Louise Mushikiwabo said “Media is not any enemy to governments”

Editors raised issues of access to information, funding issues and lack of clear debates with the political leaders on issues of journalists’ harassments and assaults as the concerns.

Participants to this dialogue include high-ranking government officials from public and private institutions, editors and managers from Rwanda and Africa, media development partners, international experts and scholars, and representatives of civil society organization.

Alongside with Minister in President’s office of South Africa and African Union Commissioner for energy and infrastructure, Mushikiwabo said “time for leaders who muzzle media is over.”

“The political message is clear; Media is not an enemy of governments. The implementation part is to be discussed in our forums like Africa Union and other regional blocs” Mushikiwabo said.

2012 dialogue on media is intended is focusing on enhancing investments in media sector for sustainability and also bring together African Editors to discuss how they should guide African media reporting on Africa.

The Africa Editors Forum aims at helping the realization of the vision set by the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) and the African Union (AU) in evolving the continent’s political and development terrain.
