Today afternoon, the Uganda police raided the offices of a vernacular (luganda) by-weekly newspaper and two senior editors of Gwanga, two other members of staff have been arrested by police for criminal libel and inciting violence.

The suspects are Kizito Sserumaga, the managing editor of Ggwanga Newspaper, Alex Lubwaga, the coordinating Editor, Patricia Sserebe, the office administrator and security guard Peter Lukyamuzi.

The suspects were picked up this afternoon following a police raid on the offices of Ggwanga newspaper in Wakaliga, a city suburb. Siraji Bakileke, Old Kampala District Police Commander who led the raid says that they decided to arrest the suspects after recovering materials used to incite violence.

Bakileke, the police commander, accused the biweekly newspaper of printing materials aimed at inciting violence. Police also impounded a central processing Unit for one of the computers for further scrutiny.

Bakileke said that the suspects will be taken to Old Kampala Police station for further interrogations. One of the workers of Gwanga who declined to be named says that the said materials are copies of leaflets that were printed by the activists for Change to boost support for the Walk to Work protests.

He explains that during the raid police searched the entire offices including in the ceiling board. Moses Kasibante, a columnist of the Gwanga newspaper denies that they printed the leaflets saying that Gwanga does not own a printer.

He explains that the said materials were only given to Ggwanga just like any other PR material is distributed to media houses during press briefing.
