NEWYORK-Inter-communal violence claimed the lives of hundreds of people in the South Sudan state of Junglei within just six weeks, according to a UN report.

The UN Mission in South Sudan’s recorded 612 fatalities in the course of the attacks on Murle settlements and 276 deaths resulting from the attacks on the Lou Nuer and Dinka communities between December 2011 and February 2012.

The report recommends that the government activate an Investigation Committee into the Jonglei State Crisis.

“The clashes are often described as a form of cattle rustling and retaliatory counter attacks at the same time, because often many thousands of cows are also taken during these raids but more recently and particularly towards the end of last year we observed this went beyond cattle rustling there was more direct attacks including on women and children.” Richard Bennet said.

Richard Bennett, Director of UNMISS Human Rights Division says the report also calls for the prosecution of all those responsible for the violence.
